Shoresh Ismail

Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, Kurdistan Regional Government, Iraq

Shoresh Ismail Abdulla is the Minister of Peshmerga Affairs in the ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Born in 1956 in Sulaymaniyah, he is a legal scholar holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science. A prominent figure within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), he is highly proficient in Kurdish, Arabic, Persian, and English.

His professional career is defined by a series of high-level leadership roles and strategic responsibilities. He first took on significant administrative duties as the Head of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union Party’s Sulaymaniyah Branch (1993–1994) and subsequently served as the Head of the Sharazoor Branch (1994–1997). His commitment to social and organizational structures was further demonstrated during his tenure as Head of the Gali Kurdistan Martyr’s Organization under the Sulaymaniyah Administration from 2002 to 2005.

Moving into central party operations, he served as the Deputy Head of the PUK’s Organization (Rekhesten) Office between 2005 and 2008. Since 2008, he has held the critical position of Head of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union Party’s Electoral Office, overseeing the party’s electoral strategies and processes.

On July 10, 2019, he was appointed Minister of Peshmerga Affairs. In this capacity, he leads the institutional reform and unification of the Peshmerga forces, working in close coordination with the International Coalition to establish a modernized military framework. After a brief period of absence due to political developments, he officially resumed his ministerial duties in November 2023, reaffirming his dedication to the professionalization of the regional defense forces and the security of the Kurdistan Region.
