Carmelo Abela

MP; f. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs and National Security of Malta

Carmelo Abela is a seasoned Maltese politician with an extensive track record in national security, international diplomacy, and legislative affairs. He currently serves as a Member of the House of Representatives of Malta, continuing a parliamentary career that began in 1996.

Abela has held several high-ranking portfolios within the Maltese government. As Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion (2017–2020), he played a central role in strengthening Malta’s diplomatic ties and advancing its interests within the European Union and the Commonwealth. Previously, he served as the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, where he oversaw the country’s internal safety apparatus, police force, and migration policies during a period of significant regional challenges in the Mediterranean.

Throughout his career, including his tenure as Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Abela has been a strong advocate for social dialogue, sustainable development, and regional stability. His leadership is marked by a commitment to multilateralism and the promotion of Malta as a key bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean.
