Irakli Alasania is a Georgian diplomat and politician who served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Georgia. He has also represented Georgia as Ambassador to the United Nations and the United Kingdom. He is widely recognized for his commitment to Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration and his strategic expertise in regional security.
A distinguished statesman and security expert, Alasania served as Minister of Defence and First Deputy Prime Minister (2012–2014), where he spearheaded major military reforms aimed at aligning Georgia’s armed forces with NATO standards. His diplomatic career includes serving as Georgia’s Ambassador to the United Nations (2006–2008), representing the country during periods of heightened regional tension.
Earlier in his career, he held high-level roles related to conflict resolution, including Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and Personal Representative of the President in Georgian–Abkhaz peace negotiations. A graduate of Tbilisi State University with a background in international law and experience in intelligence and security services, Alasania remains a key voice in Black Sea and Caucasus strategic dialogue, focusing on regional stability, defence modernization, and democratic resilience amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
