Frans Timmermans

f. Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; f. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands

Frans Timmermans is a leading Dutch politician and former Executive Vice-President of the European Commission. He previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is widely recognized for his leadership of the European Green Deal, as well as for his long-standing role in European diplomacy and institutional reform.

A distinguished statesman and diplomat, Timmermans has built a prolific career spanning national politics, international diplomacy, and the highest levels of European governance. He studied French Language and Literature at Radboud University and European Law at the University of Nancy, before beginning his career at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Embassy in Moscow. In the early 1990s, he transitioned into European policy, serving as a staff member to a European Commissioner and as Senior Adviser to the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.

From 1998 to 2007, he was a Member of the Dutch Parliament for the Labour Party (PvdA), later serving as Minister for European Affairs (2007–2010) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (2012–2014), gaining international prominence during major global crises. In 2014, he joined the European Commission as First Vice-President, responsible for Better Regulation, the Rule of Law, and Fundamental Rights. Between 2019 and 2023, he served as Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, leading the European Union’s historic climate transition. He currently leads the GroenLinks–PvdA alliance in the Netherlands, continuing his commitment to multilateralism, social justice, and the European project.
