European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism
Apostolos Tzitzikostas is a distinguished Greek politician and the current European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. His career is characterized by a long-standing commitment to regional governance, European integration, and public service.
He began his professional journey in the early 2000s in the private sector, founding his own company specializing in the production and distribution of organic dairy products in 2002. His early experience also includes a period at the United States Congress, where he worked at the Office of the President of the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
His political career launched in 2007 when he was elected as a Member of the Hellenic Parliament for the Thessaloniki A constituency with the Nea Demokratia party. During his parliamentary term, he was an active member of the Standing Committee on National Defense and Foreign Affairs. In 2010, he transitioned to regional government, being elected Deputy Governor of Central Macedonia and Head of the Thessaloniki Regional Unit.
In 2013, he assumed the role of Governor of Central Macedonia, a position he held for over a decade through successive electoral victories. His leadership was further recognized on a national level in 2019, when he was elected President of the Association of Greek Regions.
Parallel to his work in Greece, he became a prominent figure in Brussels. In 2020, he was elected President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), representing the interests of local and regional authorities across the European Union. Following his presidency, he served as the First Vice-President of the CoR until 2024.
In December 2024, he reached the pinnacle of his European career by being appointed European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. In this role, he is tasked with spearheading the transition to green mobility, enhancing the EU’s transport infrastructure, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the European tourism sector.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Government and International Relations from Georgetown University and a Master’s degree in European Public Policy and Economics from University College London (UCL).
